INTRODUCTION
Based on the Gothic romance novel by British author Daphne du Maurier, this profound production intertwines suspense and romance. It premiered to great acclaim in April 2008 as the first musical in the Theater Create Opening Series. This romantic mystery, unfolding in a compact yet immersive theatrical space, was a smash hit with every performance sold out for approximately three months. In April and May 2010, a large-scale theater version opened at the Imperial Theater to great acclaim. It has remained a popular production, even being staged in 2019 as the finale of the lineup celebrating the 10th anniversary of Theater Crie’s opening. And now, after seven long years, it returns to Theater Crie for its fourth production! Furthermore, this production of *Rebecca*, the first in seven years, features an entirely new cast!
STORY
Maxim, an upper-class gentleman who owns the vast estate and land known as “Manderley,” and “I,” who serves as Mrs. Van Hopper’s maid, meet at a hotel in Monte Carlo where they are staying. Maxim, still haunted by the shadow of his first wife Rebecca’s accidental death, takes a fancy to “me”—who has given him a sense of peace he had long forgotten—and falls in love with me, eventually marrying me.
After their honeymoon, the two begin living together at “Manderley.” While my sister-in-law and her husband welcome me warmly, the servants keep their distance from the new mistress, and Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, treats me harshly. Mrs. Danvers, who had served the beautiful, intelligent, and perfect Rebecca since childhood and now managed the estate as housekeeper even after Rebecca’s death, still harbored feelings for Rebecca and refused to acknowledge “me” as the mistress of Manderley.
Manderley is a beautiful estate, but within it, the lingering presence of the late Rebecca is so strong that it feels as if she were still alive. Even Maxim continues to suffer under the shadow of the late Rebecca, and his relationship with “I” gradually deteriorates…
Then one day, Rebecca’s body is discovered following an unexpected accident… What is the truth behind Rebecca’s death, and what will Mrs. Danvers do when she learns it…?
