Opera: “Il Pagliaccio” -TOKYO Style-
Part 1: Opera “Il Pagliaccio” (in two acts)
With Japanese subtitles
Masafumi Akikawa, star of “A Thousand Winds,” in the long-awaited role of Canio!!
The Italian opera “Pagliacci” that even moved Al Capone,
played by Robert De Niro!
In the opera house scene from the movie “The Untouchables,”
Al Capone wipes away tears while watching the opera.
The very production being performed at that moment is the Italian opera “Pagliacci.”
What is the story of this opera that can move even the most ruthless villain?
...
Canio (Pagliaccio), the leader of a traveling theater troupe, loves his young and beautiful wife, Nedda—the troupe’s star actress—with all his heart.
While continuing her life on the road with her domineering husband Canio, Nedda gradually begins to yearn for freedom.
She eventually forms a deep connection with Silvio, a young villager they meet during their travels.
Enamored with Nedda, Silvio persuades her to elope and escape the life of a traveling performer.
Tonio, the clown, also tries to woo Nedda behind the back of the troupe leader, Canio, but is rejected.
Holding a grudge, Tonio leads Canio to the scene where Nedda is meeting with Silvio, orchestrating a dramatic confrontation.
...Having learned of his wife Nedda’s infidelity, Canio (Pagliaccio) hides his anger and sorrow and takes the stage as a clown, but gradually loses the ability to distinguish between the play and reality.
And then...
A captivating cast featuring a lineup of star singers! A night you won’t want to miss.
Please enjoy the power of live theater.
