Detail
London's Courtauld Gallery is a treasure house of world-renowned Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works—Manet's late masterpiece A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, Renoir's Theatre Box displayed at the First Impressionist Exhibition, Cézanne's The Card Players, Gauguin's Te Rerioa—these are just some of the masterpieces at the Courtauld. While these works are rarely lent for display outside London, renovations at the Courtauld have allowed us to bring these works to Japan. The Courtauld was founded by Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947), an English industrialist who was also an avid art collector with a superb eye. Determined to convey the fascination of modern French painting to his own country, he energetically collected such works, mainly in the 1920s. In 1932 he decided to found an art research and teaching institute at the University of London and donate his collection for its gallery. The research institute was named the Courtauld Institute of Art and the Courtauld Gallery was created as its exhibition space. The Courtauld's research aspect is also seen in this exhibition's interpretative materials that highlight the findings of art historical and scientific investigations of each work. We hope you will enjoy this chance to have an in-person dialogue with a splendid selection of approximately 60 paintings and sculptures from the Courtauld Gallery.
