Experience the Elegant World of Traditional Japanese Dance — Kamishichiken’s Kotobukikai Performance
Step into the refined world of Nihon Buyo — classical Japanese dance — at this year’s Kotobukikai, held by Kyoto’s historic geisha district, Kamishichiken.
The program begins with "Shitadashi Sanbaso", a humorous yet auspicious dance celebrating peace and prosperity. It sets the stage with joyful energy and a festive spirit.Next is "Seigaiha", a graceful dance performed to Kiyomoto music, evoking the tranquil ebb and flow of ocean waves. Its elegance reflects the harmony of ancient court traditions."Toge no Manzai" follows — a charming duet depicting a pair of wandering entertainers. With comic timing and heartfelt gestures, the story unfolds through expressive movement and rhythm. Finally, enjoy "Atamayama", a witty and imaginative dance inspired by a classic rakugo (comic storytelling) tale, where a cherry tree grows from a man's head, leading to a surreal and comical hanami (cherry blossom viewing) scene.
Even if you don’t understand Japanese, the beauty of movement, music, costume, and expression will speak to the heart. This is more than a performance — it’s a window into the soul of Japanese tradition.
Come discover the magic of Kyoto’s geiko and maiko through the living art of dance.
