Detail
For sighted, visually impaired, and visually impaired alike,
a journey through the world of classical literature through Noh and Kodan (traditional Japanese storytelling) with a shared theme.
This time, we will focus on "Yashima," and enjoy it through Noh, Kyogen, and Kodan.

Keigo Suzuki (Kanze-ryu Noh actor, Shite)

During the Battle of Yashima, the Taira army, facing imminent defeat, wanted to strike back, so they tied a fan target to a boat and provoked the Minamoto archers into shooting it. Minamoto no Yoshitsune accepted the challenge and entrusted this important task to the young 16-year-old Nasu Yoichi…

Teikyo Ichiryusai, renowned for his war chronicles, will read this story.

A narration performed as a special interlude in the Noh play "Yashima." This is a captivating Kyogen play that recounts the famous episode from the Battle of Yashima during the Genpei War, in which Nasu no Yoichi of the Minamoto clan hit the fan target. The play features a single actor portraying Nasu no Yoichi, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Goto Hyoe Sanemoto, creating a spectacular and engaging performance.

A traveling monk from the capital arrives at Yashima Bay in Sanuki Province. He seeks lodging for the night at a salt shop, and in his dream, the spirit of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, in armor, appears and reenacts the Battle of Yashima, but disappears at dawn.
