Shinjuku Kabukicho Noh Stage

Detail
Experience a Traditional Japanese Dance Show by Kabukicho Hosts
Under the guidance of master Wakashizuki Yamamura from the Yamamura School of Kamigata-mai, a group of men from Kabukicho will present their first recital, titled “The Life of an Amorous Man – Kamigata-mai Yamamura Style Japanese Dance,” from May 16 to May 23, 2025 (closed on May 19).

On May 18, there will be an after-talk featuring Sebastian Takagi and Maki Tezuka, a representative of Smappa!Group. The final day, May 23, will feature a special performance by Wakashizuki Yamamura titled “Kurokami.” The recital will take place at the Shinjuku Kabukicho Noh Stage, a serene venue nestled amidst the vibrant atmosphere of Kabukicho.

In the Spirit of Yonosuke from “The Life of an Amorous Man”
“The Life of an Amorous Man” (1682), the debut novel by Ihara Saikaku, is considered the foundational work of ukiyo-zōshi (tales of the floating world). It tells the story of Yonosuke, a legendary playboy whose elegance rivals that of Genji, blending sophistication and crudeness in a narrative inspired by both “The Tale of Genji” and “The Tales of Ise.”

Reflecting this spirit, the men of Kabukicho have been diligently training in Kamigata-mai under Wakashizuki Yamamura, all striving to embody elegance and refinement. Kamigata-mai is a classical Japanese dance that originates from the Kansai region and is known for its subtle movements, ideal for tatami rooms, allowing for the expression of nuanced emotions.

This first recital is a testament to the performers’ continuous training and commitment. Ten performers will showcase solo and group dances to pieces such as “Takasago” and “Matsuzukushi.” We warmly invite you to enjoy this classical dance experience and appreciate the dedication of the gentlemen of Kabukicho.

Message from Wakashizuki Yamamura:
“I am truly delighted to hold this Japanese dance recital in Kabukicho, once envisioned as a sacred space for Kabuki. Everyone has practiced with great dedication—please witness the fruits of their efforts.”
